Phatmorph is Eugene Ke, also known as 老佑. As a guitarist of Taiwan’s renowned band, Tolaku, He loves the manipulation of guitar sound and effects. The first time Tolaku recorded in a studio, Eugene immediately felt at home among the thousands of knobs and buttons, surrounded by rack devices and patch cables. After releasing two albums with Sony Music Taiwan, he decided to set his sights at becoming a studio engineer and acquired his first job as a runner in Life Recording Studio, Taipei.

The priority of the runner’s job in the studio is to make every session run smoothly.- So I memorized everyone’s habits, including gear selection and patches, drink and food preference, even their sandals of choice. Everybody is so busy, the only way you can learn is to watch and listen closely, then practice these things after every session has ended. And to try to ask questions politely when the engineer is free.”

After 3 years, he was promoted to Staff Assistant, and worked closely with Dave Yang(credits include Jay Chou, Wu Bai, and Jolin Tsai to name a few). Eugene spent 7 years as an apprentice under this mix master, developing a detailed work perspective and mindful artistry in tandem with his growing skills of audio engineering, untimately becoming Staff Engineer when 2010. When working on Sodareen’s 6th album, the producer discovered the possibility of using a vocal dubbing session’s headphone mix during live concert, so Eugene started out on the road accompanying them on tour.

The environment and pressure between studio sessions and live concerts are enormously different, although the work is basically the same. You can spend hours and hours to get a great take and inspiring mix, but the decision-making in concerts is final and happens in a snap. While the environment of a recording studio is fixed and well-balanced, it’s everchanging when touring the entire world. I spent almost 2 years getting into the swing of it.

Eugene’s credits and works in various genres have positioned him among the elite in this business. The ability to work in both demanding studio sessions and live concerts is rare and highly valued. In 2020 he began producing albums after already co-producing Tolaku for many years. With a mind full of experience and relentless enthusiasm, Eugene welcomes all music creators to work together, click here to create!!
